Nestled amidst the tranquil bushland of Lilydale in Melbourne’s outer east sits Edinburgh College. It’s more than just a school. It’s a place where character is nurtured, learning is celebrated, and service is championed. Edinburgh College wasn’t always one entity. It was once two separate institutions: Lilydale Adventist Academy and Edinburgh Adventist Primary School. Today, Edinburgh College offers a seamless educational journey from early learning through Year 12, all on one picturesque campus. The college sits on 19 hectares, originally part of the Mitchell estate. An interesting piece of history is that the caretaker’s cottage from the original estate, built by Dame Nellie Melba’s sister, still stands on campus. Lilydale Adventist Academy first opened its doors in 1964, thanks to the vision of W. J. Gilson. The initial buildings included classrooms, administration facilities, and a boys’ dormitory. The girls’ dormitory followed in 1966. Over time, the campus has grown to include a cafeteria, a student chapel, dedicated art and technology facilities, a science building, an assembly hall, and a gymnasium. The old dormitories have found new life as a language center and a space for music, home economics, textiles, and middle school classes. While Edinburgh College is rooted in the Seventh-day Adventist faith, it welcomes students of diverse Christian backgrounds. Spiritual development is an integral part of the curriculum, with religion classes and weekly chapel services. But education at Edinburgh College extends beyond academics and spirituality. Students are encouraged to explore their talents and interests through a rich co-curricular program. Music plays a significant role, with private tuition available in a range of instruments and opportunities to perform in school bands and ensembles. The college also fosters a strong sense of community and service. Students participate in camps, local community projects, and even volunteer opportunities overseas in Vanuatu. From the youngest learners in early learning to graduating seniors, Edinburgh College strives to equip each student with the values, knowledge, and skills to thrive in the world and make a positive impact.
