What exactly is Edinburgh BioQuarter? It is a 167-acre site. It’s dedicated to life sciences research and development, medical teaching and healthcare delivery. Over 9000 people work and study within Edinburgh BioQuarter.

Major investment has shaped the BioQuarter. Over the past three decades more than \u00a3600m has been invested in capital developments. This includes investment in purpose-built healthcare and medical research facilities. These facilities support the strong focus on translational medicine. They help convert novel research into new treatments. This approach is often called “bench to bedside” medicine.

The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is here. It’s a 900-bed acute teaching hospital. The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People is also located here. It’s a 242-bed paediatric hospital. The Chancellor’s Building is another key facility. It is home to the University of Edinburgh’s world-renowned Edinburgh Medical School.

The Queen’s Medical Research Institute stands as a clinical research facility. The University of Edinburgh operates it. The institute houses several important centres. These include the Centre for Cardiovascular Science and the Centre for Inflammation Research. The MRC Centre for Reproductive Health is also located here.

The MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Centre for Tissue Repair are key facilities. They both are University of Edinburgh research facilities specializing in stem cells and tissue repair. Together, they form the Institute for Regeneration and Repair.

Another essential facility is the Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic. It is a University of Edinburgh clinical research facility. It specializes in neurodegenerative diseases.

NINE is a purpose-built innovation centre. It offers flexible space for early-stage companies. The BioCubes consist of two buildings. They provide CAT 2 laboratory and office space.

Several companies have established a presence at Edinburgh BioQuarter. These companies include the pharmaceuticals giant GSK and medical devices companies CALCiViS and SIRAKOSS. Bio-manufacturer Nandi Proteins and contract research organization Aquila BioMedical are located here. Contract manufacturing organization Roslin Cells and bioinformatics specialist Fios Genomics also have a presence.

Edinburgh BioQuarter has plans for significant expansion. A \u00a3750 million expansion is planned. It would evolve the area into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood. The expansion would deliver additional healthcare and research space. Housing, a hotel, and retail and leisure space are also planned. Around 9000 new jobs would be created.

The City of Edinburgh Council, NHS Lothian, Scottish Enterprise, and the University of Edinburgh are partnering for this expansion. A development partner is being procured to take forward the development.
