“What if mirrors could talk?” I ask you now as we stand before the Edificio Eugenio Espejo. Its reflective facade shimmers under the Quito sun. This building isn’t just glass and steel. It is a landmark with a story etched in its very structure.

The Edificio Eugenio Espejo is part of the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana. It is also known as “El Circular”. The building’s history stretches back to the 1950s. Quito was chosen to host a conference. The Organization of American States would meet here. Although that event never happened, several construction projects begun for it still needed to be finished. One of them was a new building for museums of the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana.

Architect René Denis Zaldumbide conceived the Edificio Eugenio Espejo in 1956. He returned from France at the invitation of Benjamín Carrión. Carrión was the first director of the CCE. Zaldumbide’s plans were approved by President Camilo Ponce Enríquez. An engineering commission reviewed them.

The definitive project was presented in 1960. By then, the conference was canceled. The building was intended for exhibitions and theaters. However, political issues affected funding. Construction stalled for many years.

In 1975, the military government of General Guillermo Rodríguez Lara revived the project. Money from the oil boom was allocated. The Edificio Eugenio Espejo was completed in 1980. This occurred during the democratic presidency of Jaime Roldós Aguilera. Internal works on the Teatro Nacional were finished in 1984. In 1992, the central area was roofed. This created the Ágora, which could hold 4500 people.

Today, the Edificio Eugenio Espejo houses several important cultural institutions. The Biblioteca Nacional Eugenio Espejo is one. You can also find the Museo Nacional del Ecuador here. The Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno also resides here. Music lovers will appreciate the Museo de Instrumentos Musicales Pedro Pablo Traversari. There is also the Galería Nacional de Dibujo. The Cine Demetrio Aguilera Malta provides a space for film. Radio of the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana broadcasts from here.

The Edificio Eugenio Espejo stands on a quadrangular plot. It sits at the northern end of the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana complex. The Palacio Benjamín Carrión is nearby. So is the Teatro Prometeo and Parque El Arbolito.

The building has an ovoid shape. Its design was avant-garde for its time. The main entrance faces Avenida 12 de Octubre. The most famous facade is on the Avenida 6 de Diciembre.

The building’s design features three key elements. There is the entrance facade made of concrete. The rest of the building is covered in glass. The roof is made of polycarbonate. It forms hyperbolic planes over the Ágora.

Inside, the building features open stairways and concrete pillars. Some rooms have paneling for acoustic reasons. Many spaces have double-height ceilings.

The Edificio Eugenio Espejo is surrounded by green spaces. Sculptures by Ecuadorian and international artists are exhibited here. These gardens provide a transition to the surrounding avenues.

In 2015, the United Nations chose the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana complex as the temporary site for the Habitat III conference. Sustainable urban development was discussed here. The UN and the Ecuadorian government allocated funds to renovate the complex.

So, as you gaze at the Edificio Eugenio Espejo, remember its history. It is a story of ambition, political challenges, and cultural revival. It is a mirror reflecting Quito’s past and present.
