The foundation stone was laid on October 5 1952. The ceremony drew over 15000 faithful attendees. Catholic authorities and organizations from Uruguay were present. The Edificio del Seminario Arquidiocesano de Toledo finally opened in 1961. Presbyter Francisco Zargozzi became its first rector. Architect Mario Payssé Reyes won the design contest in 1952. He collaborated with Chappe Monestier and others. Payssé Reyes’ design made extensive use of brick. He saw brick as humanity’s first material. It was said to dominate air earth water and fire. The architect aimed for a design suitable for the environment.

The Taller Torres García influenced national architecture. It integrated visual arts. Joaquín Torres García returned to Uruguay in 1944. The church within the Edificio del Seminario Arquidiocesano reflects this influence. The creator integrated architecture and the plastic arts. Gonzalo Fonseca created one of the Seminario’s brick murals. He later moved to New York. Horacio Torres completed murals for the apse and altar walls in 1962. José Coller designed a mural attached to a courtyard fountain in 1963.

A brick mural on the church’s entrance portrays church history with symbols and letters. Inside vertical colored glass connects Horacio Torres’ work with the exterior mural. This combines the solid bricks with the ethereal light. However the Edificio del Seminario Arquidiocesano’s role soon changed. On August 24 1969 it became the Escuela Militar. This followed Law 13.737. The Edificio del Seminario Arquidiocesano was acquired from the Archbishopric of Montevideo.

The church now stands within the Escuela Militar grounds. It was declared a National Historical Monument on May 8 2006. The declaration recognized the building as a conceptual integration of architecture and the plastic arts. Payssé Reyes designed brick murals for the chapel facade and fountains. The designs inside the chapel were created by the Taller Torres García. The Edificio del Seminario Arquidiocesano de Toledo stands as a symbol. It represents the blend of faith art and architecture.
