In 1981, the Edificio CFN pierced Quito’s skyline. It became a symbol of Ecuador’s oil boom prosperity. The Edificio CFN, also known as the former Torre CFN, stands tall at 83 meters. For a decade, it held the title of Ecuador’s tallest modern building. It was surpassed only by historical structures like the Basilica del Voto Nacional. Architects Ovidio Wappenstein and Ramiro Jácome designed the Edificio CFN. They envisioned it as a modernist icon. Its dark glass and concrete exterior give it a distinct, sober appearance. The Edificio CFN is located in La Mariscal. It’s bordered by Avenida Patria and several streets: Reina Victoria, Juan León Mera, and 18 de Septiembre. Originally, the Edificio CFN housed the Corporación Financiera Nacional. It also held the Secretaría Nacional de Planificación y Desarrollo. Today, the Edificio CFN serves as the headquarters for the Fiscalía General del Estado, Ecuador’s Attorney General’s office. It has also housed offices for UNESCO and the Japanese Embassy. The top floor of the Edificio CFN features a dining area. It offers a panoramic view of Quito, a hidden gem for those who work within its walls.
