Stretching skyward, the Edifício Avenida Central embodies Rio’s pioneering spirit. This building stands as a testament to architectural innovation. Let’s delve into the story of this iconic structure. Inaugurated on May 22 1961, the Edifício Avenida Central quickly became a landmark. It was located on Avenida Rio Branco 156. During that time Rio de Janeiro was integrating the State of Guanabara.

The Edifício Avenida Central was designed by architect Henrique Mindlin. Its construction took three years. It was the first building in downtown Rio with a metal structure. This replaced reinforced concrete. This pioneering design reflected the modernist language. It was influenced by architect Mies van der Rohe. At its opening, the Edifício Avenida Central was the city’s tallest building. It boasted 34 floors, 18 elevators, 12 escalators and a heliport.

The building features a steel, aluminum, and glass structure. This was a departure from traditional concrete. Another architectural innovation was its base. It has four above-ground and one underground level. A tower with 1061 rooms rises from this base. The base houses nearly 200 stores. It has been a commercial center since its opening. Today it is known as Shopping Avenida Central. It specializes in computer and electronic equipment sales.

Before the Edifício Avenida Central, the site held two Belle Époque symbols. These were the Hotel Avenida and the Galeria Cruzeiro. Both had eclectic European-influenced architecture. By the 1950s, the Hotel Avenida had declined. This was due to the city’s rapid growth and new architectural trends. In 1957, the old concrete structure was demolished. This made way for a symbol of modernity. Classic European architecture had previously represented innovation. Now, the American skyscraper model gained popularity among Brazilian architects and engineers.

The Galeria Cruzeiro once held a special place for carnivalgoers. It was a central location where revelers gathered. They arrived on crowded streetcars. They went directly to the marble tables of the bars. The Edifício Avenida Central suffered a small fire in August 2009. It occurred in the maintenance oil depot in the basement. Some stores were flooded. The fire was contained but it startled the neighbors.

In 2011, the Edifício Avenida Central celebrated its 50th anniversary. It received many tributes including an exhibition. The exhibit was called “Edifício Avenida Central 50 anos”. Designer Ricardo Simões organized it. Visitors could see architectural details. They could also trace the evolution of the building. The exhibit also showcased the Largo da Carioca and Avenida Rio Branco.

Historian Maurício Santos noted the building’s innovative spirit. In the mid-1990s, the Edifício Avenida Central was a hub for technology. Even when informatics were new to Brazil. Today, the historic building continues to be important and pioneering.

An average of 160000 people circulate through the building daily. In addition to the 14000 who work there. It is next to the busiest metro station in the city center. The gallery connects the Largo to Avenida Rio Branco. It serves as a passageway for many.

The Edifício Avenida Central is experiencing a revival. Its occupancy rates are high. Especially in the main floor shops. Only a few spaces remain vacant. The gallery is once again a vital commercial center. It contrasts with the pandemic when almost 90% of stores were empty. The Edifício Avenida Central is undergoing improvements. These include air conditioning, fire protection, and energy-efficient systems. These upgrades ensure that the Edifício Avenida Central remains a vital part of Rio’s urban landscape.
