Deep in the heart of Edgewood Washington a small group gathered. They yearned for Christian fellowship. Roads were poor. Cars were scarce. This was the early 1900s. Edgewood Baptist Church’s story begins here. It wasn’t a grand building at first. It started as a Sunday school in an old Edgewood school.
The Edgewood Baptist Church wasn’t always a church. For many years it was a humble Sunday school. Imagine the families traveling long distances on dusty roads. They met in that old school until 1933. Then the school was sold. The Sunday school moved to the Grange Hall. They persevered. They saved money. They bought land.
In 1940 construction began on a chapel. It was a significant undertaking for this close-knit community. The dedication finally arrived on Easter Sunday 1947. The bell in the belfry? It came from the very schoolhouse where it all began. A tangible link to the church’s humble beginnings. Edgewood Baptist Church’s history is woven into the very fabric of the area.
Growth continued. In 1971 Edgewood Church faced a challenge. They needed a pastor. They reached out for help. Over the next four decades five pastors served. The church expanded its facilities. A preschool was started. Solid conservative teaching was the hallmark of this ever-growing congregation.
A significant milestone arrived in 2009. Edgewood Community Church merged with Valley Bible Church. The result? Edgewood Bible Church a powerful combination of rich histories and dedicated people. The merging reflected the shared faith and the desire to serve the community even more broadly. Edgewood Baptist Church was evolving. It was becoming something greater than the sum of its parts.
In 2015 Jeff Coulter became pastor. He had returned from ministry in Sweden. He brought leadership skills. He continued the tradition of strong preaching and leadership training. He is the eleventh pastor to lead Edgewood Baptist Church. He serves both the church and the surrounding community.
Edgewood Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. It started small. It grew steadily. It overcame challenges. Through it all one thing remained constant: the unwavering dedication to sharing God’s word and fostering a supportive community. It’s a story of faith and resilience a story worth remembering.
