This imposing building, standing tall on Bryn Mawr Avenue, has been a beacon of faith for generations. Founded in 1896, it has weathered storms and celebrated triumphs, mirroring the ever-evolving tapestry of Chicago.
The church, which boasts a prominent French Romanesque style, is more than just a place of worship. It reflects the immigrant spirit of the early 20th century, when Scottish and Welsh settlers sought a spiritual haven in this growing city. In 1926, a new chapter commenced. The construction of the ‘New Community House’, as it was then called, was a testament to the unwavering spirit of the congregation. This edifice, in its grand design, features Bedford Indiana limestone, captivating carvings by Emil Zettler, and the revolutionary fireproof reinforced concrete of its time. The church became a social hub, buzzing with activity. It hosted a gymnasium, a men’s glee club, a Boy Scouts troop, missionary societies and one of the largest Bible studies in the United States.
But the roaring twenties were followed by a period of economic uncertainty and hardship. The stock market crash of 1929 brought about the stark reality of financial struggles. The congregation, however, rallied, demonstrating an incredible resilience. They mortgaged their own homes, putting their faith into practice, to save their beloved sanctuary.
In the decades following, the church became a place of unity, holding fast to its mission of serving the community. Witnessing changing demographics, they welcomed immigrants from diverse backgrounds, infusing their worship with African, Caribbean and Asian influences.
