A devastating fire. That’s how many remember Edgebrook Lutheran Church. Edgebrook Lutheran Church wasn’t always the resilient structure it is today. It began humbly in 1939. The first service took place at Edgebrook School. For years services were held there and in a nearby storefront.

Edgebrook Lutheran Church finally found a permanent home. It was dedicated on December 12 1943. This location at 5252 West Devon Avenue in Chicago became a cornerstone of the Edgebrook neighborhood. The church expanded in 1953 and again in 1957. A parish hall was added to accommodate the growing congregation.

Then came January 31 2010. A devastating fire tore through the church. The narthex offices and sanctuary suffered extensive damage. It was heartbreaking. The congregation however found strength in their faith. They returned to Edgebrook School just like the very first services. This time it was not a beginning but a temporary return. They mourned their loss. But they continued to celebrate their faith.

Edgebrook Lutheran Church’s story is one of resilience. With help from other churches and schools it was rebuilt. The Rising Chapel opened within months. The sanctuary reopened by fall 2011. The church was back. Edgebrook Lutheran Church stands today as a testament to faith and community. It’s a vibrant center of the Edgebrook neighborhood. It continues to serve generations of families.

Today Edgebrook Lutheran Church thrives. It’s a place of worship a place of community. It’s a place where the joy of forgiveness authentic community and new life in Jesus Christ are celebrated. This history is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament. A testament to the enduring spirit of a congregation that has faced adversity and emerged stronger.
