Did you know that “La Gata” Munguía was known for his disguises? Right here, we stand before the Edgard Munguía War Memorial. It commemorates a remarkable Nicaraguan revolutionary.

Edgard José Munguía Álvarez was born in 1947. He was also known as “La Gata” Munguía. “La Gata” translates to “The Cat.” He was a charismatic figure in the Sandinista National Liberation Front.

Munguía studied biology. He also excelled as an actor. He even became the first president of the University Council. This was at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua.

Edgard Munguía’s father was a lawyer and poet. In the sixties, Munguía worked with Alberto Icaza. Icaza was involved in theater and visual arts. Munguía dedicated himself to the stage. In 1979, the experimental hall of the Rubén Darío Theater was named after him.

Munguía studied biology in León. He became responsible for the Revolutionary Student Federation. This city was the country’s most influential.

Edgard Munguía fought against the Somoza regime. He was the first president of the University Council. He represented Nicaragua at an international youth congress in New York. He denounced human rights violations there. He traveled to Chile, Cuba, and Czechoslovakia.

In 1973, Munguía was in Chile with Salvador Allende. Then he went to Cuba with Fidel Castro. He received military training there.

In 1975, he joined the “Pablo Úbeda” Brigade. He fought alongside Jacinto Hernández and others. They were under the command of Víctor Manuel Tirado López.

On March 21, 1975, Munguía led an attack. His unit targeted the National Guard in Río Blanco. They set the command on fire and occupied it for two hours. They held a rally to denounce fraudulent elections and injustices.

On September 13, 1976, the National Guard found Munguía’s camp. He died in combat in “El Ocote”. This was in the department of Matagalpa.

Edgard Munguía is remembered as a Sandinista hero. His words resonate today. “The true heroes are those who gave their lives for freedom and revolution.”

The UNAN-León commemorates him with new projects. These projects restore rights to education, health, freedom and peace. The “Cmte. Edgard Munguía Álvarez” scholarship program honors him. The Edgar La Gata Munguía Pavilion also stands in his memory.

Edgard “La Gata” Munguía’s legacy endures. He remains an inspiration. He defended workers, farmers, and the oppressed. He shines as a revolutionary with both a pen and a rifle. His impact echoes from the university to the mountains.
