Is there a better place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life than Eden Park? This tranquil locality, nestled just 36 kilometers northeast of Melbourne’s Central Business District, might seem like a world away, but it holds a fascinating history intertwined with the growth of Victoria. Eden Park wasn’t always dotted with homes and families. Its story began in 1854 when a vast 400-hectare expanse of land was purchased by Ewen and Janet Robertson. Here, they built their dream, a grand twelve-room homestead christened “Breadalbane.” The land, however, presented a challenge. The Robertsons soon discovered that much of their Eden Park estate was susceptible to erosion. This made development difficult and ultimately shaped the future of the area. In 1888, with the dream of a grand estate fading, the Robertsons sold most of their land. An ambitious investor saw an opportunity to create a suburban haven, dividing the land into over 1300 lots, giving birth to what we now know as Eden Park. Despite the idyllic vision painted by the developers, the fragile soil continued to pose problems, limiting the area’s growth. This is why, even today, Eden Park retains a peaceful, rural atmosphere, a far cry from the bustling city center, yet close enough for a quick visit. The heart of Eden Park beats with a rich history and a resilient spirit.
