Time travel with me to the 1780s. William Eden leased land here. He developed it as farmland. This marked the beginning of what we now know as Eden Park.
Today, we are standing in Eden Park. It is a suburban area in Greater London. Eden Park resides within the London Borough of Bromley. Before 1965, it was part of Kent. Eden Park is south of Beckenham. It is west of Park Langley and Shortlands. To the north lies West Wickham and Monks Orchard. Elmers End is to the east.
Eden Park has evolved dramatically over the centuries. It transformed from rural farmland into a bustling suburb. Large mansions began appearing in the 19th century. The opening of Eden Park station in 1882 spurred growth. After World War I, development accelerated rapidly. Sadly, many older mansions were replaced. Suburban housing now characterizes the area.
For a time, Eden Park was known for a different kind of activity. From 1994 to 2004, a large skating park thrived here. However, noise complaints led to its closure by Bromley Council.
Let’s talk about amenities. Near the railway station, you will find a row of shops. Another set of shops exists in the area formerly called Upper Elmers End. If you are hungry, there are several restaurants. One notable spot is the Toby Carvery pub. This building started as a hotel in 1936.
Parks offer green spaces within Eden Park. Crease Park is one of them. It was named for local Alderman James Crease. The park opened in July 1936. Stanhope Recreation Ground is on Stanhope Grove. Harvington Sports Ground, also known as Harvington Estate, is on Eden Park Avenue.
Getting around Eden Park is quite easy. Eden Park railway station offers services to various London destinations. These include London Charing Cross, London Cannon Street, and Hayes. Three Transport for London buses serve the area. The 194 goes to Lower Sydenham and West Croydon. The 356 runs to Upper Sydenham and Shirley. The 358 travels to Crystal Palace and Orpington.
Eden Park is also home to several schools. Langley Park Primary School is here. Also, Langley Park School for Boys and Langley Park School for Girls. Marian Vian Primary School is another option. Orion Eden Park, previously Eden Park High School, serves the community. Lastly, there is Unicorn Primary School.
