Founded in 1883 the École Supérieure de Chimie Physique Électronique de Lyon CPE Lyon boasts a rich history. It began as the École Supérieure de Chimie Industrielle de Lyon ESCIL. Jules Raulin a student of the renowned Louis Pasteur was its first director. Imagine the innovative spirit that infused this early institution.

The ESCIL thrived. In 1919 Victor Grignard the 1912 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry took the helm. His influence undoubtedly shaped the school’s future trajectory. That same year another institution the Institut de Chimie et Physique Industrielles de Lyon ICPI was established by Professor Lepercq. These two schools represented different facets of scientific innovation in Lyon.

The ESCIL’s contributions to the nation were significant. In 1933 the Ministry of War awarded it the prestigious Legion of Honour for its exceptional service. This recognition underscores its crucial role during wartime.

Fast forward to 1993. Hubert Curien a former chairman of the European Space Agency ESA former president of CERN and former minister became president of ESCIL. His leadership prepared the school for a remarkable transformation.

In 1994 ESCIL and ICPI merged to form the current CPE Lyon. This union created a powerhouse of chemistry and electronics education and research. The combined expertise of these institutions propelled CPE Lyon to international prominence. This merger significantly expanded its academic offerings and research capabilities.

Over the years CPE Lyon has nurtured many successful alumni. Yves Chauvin a 2005 Nobel laureate in Chemistry is among them. Other notable alumni include Jean-Marie Basset a member of the French Academy of Sciences and Jean Jouzel a renowned glaciologist and climatologist. Their achievements reflect CPE Lyon’s dedication to scientific excellence.

Today CPE Lyon continues to flourish. It has 11 research laboratories. It partners with CNRS and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. It boasts 24000 square meters dedicated to education and research. It produces hundreds of publications and patents annually. The school remains at the forefront of scientific innovation. It trains highly skilled engineers for the chemical and electronics industries. Its international collaborations extend to numerous universities worldwide. This is a testament to its global influence. The legacy of CPE Lyon is one of constant innovation and impactful contributions to the scientific community. The institution’s enduring success is a testament to its commitment to both academic rigor and impactful research.
