Across from Point North Park, nestled beside a new water tower on Synergy Park Blvd, lies the Eco Hub. The Eco Hub at UT Dallas isn’t just a garden. It’s a living laboratory, a hive of sustainability, and a testament to student leadership. Launched in the fall of 2021 by the Office of Sustainability, the Eco Hub occupies the site of the university’s former composting operation. It’s a place where innovation blossoms alongside experimental projects like Dr. Shalini Prasad’s soil quality sensor. Within the Eco Hub lies Luna Farm, a 20,000-square-foot micro-farm bursting with life. Here, students, staff, and faculty work side-by-side, nurturing rows of seasonal plants, trellises laden with beans and peas, and an orchard boasting peaches, plums, figs, persimmons, and pecans. The vibrant student-painted shed stands ready to dispense tools, while the greenhouse, partially funded by the Class of 2018 McDermott Scholars, shelters tender seedlings. Luna Farm isn’t just about growing food. It’s about growing community and leadership. Two student Eco Reps orchestrate weekly workdays, teaching volunteers about everything from composting to fruit tree care. Every Saturday morning, the farm welcomes the UT Dallas community to weed, water, harvest, and plant. It’s a chance to connect with the earth and each other. Luna Farm operates on three core tenets: fighting food insecurity, leadership and education, and sustainability. All produce grown here goes directly to the Comet Cupboard, providing fresh, nutritious food to students facing food insecurity. The farm adheres to organic principles, avoiding synthetic pesticides and herbicides, ensuring a healthy ecosystem for future generations. Luna Farm proudly holds the titles of North Texas Food Bank Partner Garden, USDA People’s Garden, and American Heart Association Teaching Garden. These designations represent the farm’s commitment to community, education, and sustainable practices. The Eco Hub and Luna Farm embody the spirit of UT Dallas. They’re a place where students learn, lead, and cultivate a more sustainable future.
