Nestled on a slope in Beyoğlu, overlooking the Italian Hospital, stands the Ebul Fadıl Mehmet Efendi Camii. This mosque, a quiet sentinel amidst the bustling city, holds a story as layered as the ancient stones that form its foundation. Ebul Fadıl Mehmet Efendi Camii was commissioned in 1553 by a man of many titles. Ebul Fadıl Mehmet Efendi, son of the historian İdris-i Bitlisi, served as a high-ranking official, a defterdar, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. A man of letters and intellect, he was also known as Defteri, a nickname derived from his official role. The mosque’s creation was entrusted to the master architect, Mimar Sinan, who imbued the structure with his signature blend of elegance and functionality. Originally, the Ebul Fadıl Mehmet Efendi Camii complex included a school and a türbe, a mausoleum intended for Ebul Fadıl himself. Sadly, he passed away in Damascus during a pilgrimage, his body never laid to rest in the tomb he envisioned. The mosque faced its own trials. In 1916, a devastating fire swept through the Cihangir district, leaving the Ebul Fadıl Mehmet Efendi Camii severely damaged. Years later, in 1936, the remaining walls and minaret were completely demolished, a poignant end to a historical landmark. The site remained a desolate space for years. Over time, it was repurposed, serving as a tea garden for a time. The revival of Ebul Fadıl Mehmet Efendi Camii began in 1991. Thanks to the efforts of the Beyoğlu Müftülüğü and the Türkiye Diyanet Vakfı, the mosque was rebuilt, its new incarnation echoing the architectural style of its predecessor. The reconstructed mosque, opened for worship in 1994, stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring power of history. The rectangular layout of the original mosque was preserved, its walls constructed from küfeki stone and brick. The double rows of windows allow light to stream into the prayer hall. Its single dome reaches towards the heavens. The minaret, a solitary finger pointing skyward, calls the faithful to prayer.
