Ebenezer House of Prayer

In June 1902, a determined group of parishioners left Olivet Missionary Baptist Church. They established the Ebenezer House of Prayer. This small group, numbering around 30, was led by their former pastor, Rev. J.F. Thomas. The Ebenezer House of Prayer, initially located in Arlington Hall at 31st Street and Indiana Avenue, quickly outgrew its first home. The congregation thrived. By 1903, the Ebenezer House of Prayer purchased a larger building at 35th and Dearborn streets for $11,500. The growth continued under Rev. Thomas, a respected figure who also served as president of the Illinois State Baptist Convention. He was also chaplain of the 8th Regiment. The need for an even larger space led them to Isaiah Temple, a Jewish synagogue at 45th Street and Vincennes Avenue. In 1920, they agreed to purchase the building for $65,000. Sadly, Rev. Thomas passed away shortly before the move, just shy of his 78th birthday. The Ebenezer House of Prayer moved into its new home in October 1921, under the leadership of their second pastor, Rev. Charles Henry Clark. Clark’s financial leadership was instrumental in paying off the church’s mortgage by 1928. However, dissension within the congregation led to his resignation two years later. The Ebenezer House of Prayer then welcomed Rev. James Howard Lorenzo Smith as their third pastor in 1931. It was during Rev. Smith’s tenure that the Ebenezer House of Prayer became recognized as the “Birthplace of Gospel Music.” Dissatisfied with the existing church music, Rev. Smith envisioned a new sound. He brought together a team of musical innovators. Professor Theodore Frye became the director. Professor Thomas A. Dorsey became the pianist. In January 1932, the Ebenezer Gospel Chorus debuted. This 100-member chorus blended Christian praise with blues influences. This marked the beginning of modern gospel music. The Ebenezer House of Prayer’s legacy extends beyond gospel music. It became a center for social activism during the Civil Rights Movement. It served as a vital community hub. The Ebenezer House of Prayer continues to serve its community and uphold its rich history.
