Have you heard the story of a church born from humble beginnings that grew into a beacon of hope? That’s the story of Ebenezer Baptist Church Plaque. The Ebenezer Baptist Church Plaque commemorates the Ebenezer Baptist Church’s remarkable journey.
Ebenezer Baptist Church was organized in 1875. Reverend C. Ward started it in Mrs. Elisa Hawkins’ home at 1104 East Tenth Street. It was initially known as the Third Baptist Congregation in Austin.
For ten years, the congregation worshipped in a small frame structure. This structure stood at Catalpa and Curve Streets. In 1885, a significant change occurred. A brick sanctuary was built in the Gothic style. It stood at the corner of East Tenth and San Marcos streets. The congregation then added “Ebenezer” to its name. Ebenezer means “stone of help”.
Reverend L. L. Campbell led the church from 1892 to 1927. During his tenure, a stucco tabernacle was built in 1915. Expansion plans began under Reverend J. C. Lott. He served from 1928 to 1949.
The present church was erected from 1950 to 1955. Reverend Robert L. Rowe oversaw the construction. His ministry spanned from 1949 to 1968. The new structure was built of limestone and brick. It features a Gothic revival design. The bell from the first brick church is housed in one of the towers.
Ebenezer Baptist Church is known for its missionary work. Its choirs are renowned. The church actively supports local and national projects. These include scholarships and programs for the elderly. It supports the United Negro College Fund and the NAACP. It also supports Volunteer Councils of Texas State Hospitals.
In 1975, Ebenezer celebrated its 100th anniversary. Pastor Marvin C. Griffin led a mortgage-burning ceremony. The Ebenezer Baptist Church Plaque was erected in 1976.
