Remember that summer temperatures draw thousands to Eastern Beach. This popular white-sand beach is fringed with palm trees. It is located on Auckland’s Bucklands Beach peninsula.

Half way along Eastern Beach look for a New Zealand flag. It stands on a pole in the middle of the water.
Near the southern end of Eastern Beach, there is a boat ramp. It provides access to a dedicated water skiing zone. This makes Eastern Beach a favourite among water sports enthusiasts. You might see paddleboarding, kitesurfing and sometimes jet-skiing.
At the Southern End of Eastern Beach, you will find Macleans Park. It offers expansive green spaces. These are perfect for picnics and barbecues. You can lounge under the shade of native trees. Public toilets are here too. From here, a path goes through native bush. It takes you to the top of Macleans Park for great views. You’ll also notice Macleans College bordering the park.
If you’re feeling peckish, there is a restaurant across the road from Eastern Beach. It is called The Barracuda Restaurant. Near the restaurant on The Esplanade you will find a children’s playground. There is also a local shop. It’s a dairy for snacks and ice cream. You can find it on the corner when you first arrive at The Esplanade. There is also Gorkha Eastern Beach restaurant. It serves Nepalese and Indian cuisine.
Eastern Beach was once a spot for gathering shellfish. Pipi and cockles were plentiful. Today, a rāhui or ban is in place. This preserves these resources. It reflects a commitment to sustainability and respect for natural resources.
Eastern Beach is part of the Bucklands Beach peninsula. It is approximately a 30-minute drive from Auckland’s city centre.
Free parking is available along the beachfront. There is also a small car park at the Southern end where Macleans Park is. It can get busy on weekends and holidays.
Historically, Eastern Beach is part of the rohe of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. They descend from the crew of the Tainui migratory waka. They visited the area around the year 1300. The traditional name for Eastern Beach is Okokino. The headland south of the beach was known as Ngataieura.
From 1880 until 1922, John Granger operated a lime factory at Eastern Beach. He crushed and burned local shells.
Phoenix palms were planted at Eastern Beach in the 1910s. This gave the area a tropical appearance. During World War II, concrete pillboxes were built. Local residents constructed them at each end of Eastern Beach on the clifftops.
