In 1824, a seed of faith was planted in Eastcote. The Reverend Dr. Adam Clarke founded a Wesleyan Methodist Society. Eastcote Methodist Church, as we know it today, didn’t exist then. The society held meetings in the stables of Haydon Hall. This was Clarke’s retirement home. He passed away in 1832. The society struggled after his death. Then Mrs. White generously donated land on Field End Road. A small chapel was built there and opened in 1848. Eastcote grew rapidly in the 1920s and 30s. This was the Metroland era. The little chapel couldn’t accommodate the growing community. In 1935, the church purchased land where Eastcote Methodist Church now stands. The land cost £750. Construction of a new church was planned for 1939. However, the war delayed these plans. The transept, the first part of the current building, wasn’t opened until 1951. Eastcote Methodist Church was finally completed and dedicated in 1960. Additional meeting rooms were added in 1980. The old chapel on Field End Road was demolished in 1962. Two flats were built on the site for retired Methodist ministers. Today, Eastcote Methodist Church continues to serve the community. It offers Sunday services, a Sunday Club for children, and prayer meetings. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Methodist Society founded nearly two centuries ago.
