A dispensation for East Trinity Lodge No 157 AF & AM was granted in 1854. This plaque commemorates that momentous occasion. Look closely. It tells a story of pioneers and perseverance.
Before Rockwall was even a county East Trinity Lodge was already a force. Ten men petitioned for its creation. Among them were Sterling R Barnes and John O Heath. These men were among the first settlers to receive land grants. They built their homes along the Central National Road. Their hospitality to travelers helped build their community.
East Trinity Lodge’s charter was issued January 18 1855. James Wilson was its first master. John O Heath served as senior warden. S R Barnes was junior warden. The lodge thrived. It met in a small schoolhouse before building its own hall. Judge Heath’s diaries reveal many details of the early years.
The East Trinity Lodge’s first meeting location remains uncertain. The lodge used a small schoolhouse for meetings. They stored their records and regalia behind a curtain. John Butler the teacher ensured their safety. He later became a four-time Worshipful Master.
The lodge wasn’t just a social club. It was integral to the community’s growth. Its members participated in local development. They were involved in charitable works. Their contributions shaped Rockwall’s identity. The lodge continues to thrive today. Its legacy lives on through its members and its history.
