“Did you hear about the Edwardian library that used to be here?” a woman asked her friend, gesturing towards East Street Library. East Street Library, a modest yet significant landmark, sits quietly at the corner of East Street and Old Kent Road. Don’t let its unassuming appearance fool you, this library holds over a century of stories within its walls. It was built in 1967, replacing a much grander Edwardian structure demolished to make way for the Bricklayers Arms flyover. This replacement marked a continuation of the area’s dedication to literature. Industrialist George Livesey had founded a library on Old Kent Road back in 1890. East Street Library, therefore, became a successor, carrying the torch of knowledge and community. Sadly, East Street Library recently closed its doors, its services relocated to the new Una Marson Library on SE17’s Aylesbury Estate. While a new chapter begins elsewhere, the memory of East Street Library, a place where countless stories were borrowed and shared, remains.
