Here on Chicago’s southeast side stands East Side Bible Church. This independent non-denominational church has a story that began long ago. East Side Bible Church is affiliated with the Independent Fundamental Churches of America International.
The church’s roots trace back to 1900. It was initially known as “The Mission”. Incorporated in 1903 it was formally named Church of Christ. But the name didn’t stick and locals continued to call it The Mission. A new chapter began in 1915. This is when the original church building was constructed. Years later in the 1940s the church officially became East Side Bible Church.
East Side Bible Church holds fast to the Great Commission. This commitment is stated in Matthew 28:19-20. The church proclaims the truth about Jesus Christ. This truth is found in the Bible. They desire to see people become committed followers of Jesus. All are welcome to join their fellowship.
East Side Bible Church believes in the Bible as the Word of God. They hold it as the supreme authority. The church believes in one God in three persons. These are the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The church emphasizes Jesus Christ’s role as the one and only Savior. He was born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross to reconcile humanity to God. East Side Bible Church anticipates Jesus’ return to earth. He will take His church to heaven. He will reign forever as King of Kings.
The Holy Spirit dwells within every Christian. He empowers them to live a holy life. He equips them with gifts for serving others. The church believes that human beings are created in God’s image. Yet they are sinful without hope apart from Jesus Christ.
East Side Bible Church sees itself as part of the body of Christ. They are called to make disciples of Jesus. Elders oversee the functions of ministry. They shepherd the believers.
Salvation comes through God’s grace. This is through the blood of Jesus Christ. It is received by faith in Christ. The church practices baptism by immersion.
East Side Bible Church believes in the resurrection of the dead. The saved will go to eternal life in Heaven. The unsaved will experience eternal suffering in Hell. They also believe in the eternal security of the believer. Every person has direct relations with God. Each church is independent and free from interference. The church and state must remain separate.
Every saved person should live a Christ-like life. They should walk in the Holy Spirit. They should yield to Christ. This allows them to show forth praises to God.
