What would Wendell Phillips, a staunch abolitionist, think of the park that bears his name? East Phillips Park stands as a testament to his legacy, though indirectly. You see, the park takes its name from the Phillips School, a neighborhood institution named in his honor. Established in 1977 on land acquired from the Minneapolis Community Development Agency, East Phillips Park came to life after plans for housing development were scrapped. Imagine the possibilities that blossomed when the city decided to create a green space instead. This park is relatively young, with development kicking off in 1978. Baseball fields, playgrounds, and a refreshing wading pool were among the first amenities to grace the park. A year later, in 1979, a shelter was added. Fast forward to the 21st century, and East Phillips Park received a major upgrade. In 2010, a new community center opened its doors, boasting a gym, teen center, computer room, and multi-purpose rooms. That same year, the playing fields were revamped. The park also boasts an interesting connection to the American Indian Movement. The park board leased a building on the site to them, a testament to the community’s rich history. Today, East Phillips Park is a vibrant hub for recreation and community gatherings, a fitting tribute to the legacy of Wendell Phillips.
