The imposing brick building, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, stands proud on the High Road. This is East Finchley Methodist Church, a beacon of faith and community for generations. Its origins trace back to 1822 when John Freeman and Christoph Gottlob Muller, driven by their devotion, started a Methodist Society in a humble cottage. The church’s journey has been marked by several milestones: the first purpose-built church, opened in 1829, was a testament to the growing community. The old building, however, was too small for its expanding congregation, leading to the construction of the iconic present church in 1897. This was the year of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, and the opening of the church, filled with music and the scent of fresh paint, was a grand affair. The Sunday School was later added, offering religious education and a welcoming haven to children. Today, East Finchley Methodist Church continues to serve the community as a place of worship, fellowship, and a vibrant hub for various activities.
