Did you ever hear of a church with two Sunday evening services? Right here, at 1015 S. Carroll Ave, stands the East Dallas Church of Christ. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to a community’s enduring faith, offering a glimpse into a rich history spanning over a century. The East Dallas Church of Christ first opened its doors in 1903. A small group of Disciples of Christ, led by John A. Stevens, envisioned a new church in East Dallas. Their dream took shape on November 15th, 1903, with the official organization of the East Dallas Christian Church. A simple frame church was dedicated at Victor and Peak Streets. Just four years later, this original structure was relocated to Junius and Peak Streets, the very spot where the church stands today. Over the years, the East Dallas Church of Christ has seen three different buildings grace this land. First, the humble frame tabernacle. Then, a brick building, dedicated in 1912. Finally, the current sanctuary, a magnificent structure dedicated in 1925, along with a five-story educational building. The sanctuary itself is a work of art, featuring beautifully carved dark woods and inspiring stained-glass windows. The craftsmanship is a testament to a bygone era. Today, the East Dallas Church of Christ continues to serve its community. Nathaniel Bradshaw, Herbert Coats Sr., Clarence Roberson Jr., and John H. Woods serve as elders. Donnye R. Shelby is the deacon. They uphold the traditions and teachings of the Church of Christ. The East Dallas Church of Christ has a unique schedule. Sunday mornings offer two worship services, at 8:00 and 10:15. Sunday evenings, intriguingly, also boast two services. One at 6:00 pm and another at 5:00 pm during daylight savings time. Bible study classes are available on Sunday evenings as well, adjusted to 5:00 pm and 4:00 pm during daylight savings. Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm are dedicated to Bible study. The East Dallas Church of Christ isn’t simply a place of worship. It is a living landmark, a place where history and faith intertwine.
