Wondering what engineering marvel lies before us? It is the East Coast Integrated Depot. This depot is no ordinary transport hub. It represents a significant leap in Singapore’s urban planning.
The East Coast Integrated Depot is the world’s first four-in-one depot. It integrates three train depots and one bus depot into a single site. Imagine the coordination required to manage such a complex operation.
Construction began in 2016. The East Coast Integrated Depot is targeted for completion in 2026. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays. It was initially planned to open in 2024.
The train depot complex houses three MRT lines. The Downtown Line Depot is underground. The Thomson-East Coast Line Depot is at ground level. The East-West Line Depot is elevated above. Each depot operates independently. Together they can stable around 220 trains.
This integrated design saves a lot of space. It saves 44 hectares of land. That’s about 60 football fields. Think of what else could occupy that space.
The bus depot is next to the train depot complex. The ground level houses maintenance facilities. The upper levels provide parking for about 760 buses. Green features are incorporated throughout the East Coast Integrated Depot. Solar panels sit on the roofs of the rail and bus depots. LED lighting is used everywhere. The façade design maximizes natural light and ventilation.
The East Coast Integrated Depot sits beside the current Changi Depot. The Changi Depot will be demolished. This new depot will be the first in Singapore to serve three MRT lines. It is also the third to integrate with a bus depot. Tuas Depot and Gali Batu Depot already have this integration.
The East Coast Integrated Depot will be located between several stations. These include Simei station and Tanah Merah station on the East-West Line. It will also be between Xilin station and Sungei Bedok station on the Downtown Line. Finally it will be off Sungei Bedok station on the Thomson-East Coast Line.
The bus depot is a three-story structure. It includes workshops on the ground level. The upper levels provide parking. This design is similar to Soon Lee Bus Park and Woodlands Bus Depot.
“Mega Mats” were used during construction. These stabilized heavy machinery on soft ground. This replaced the slower process of installing steel decking. The project also improved precast component designs. This reduced the number of parts needed.
The East Coast Integrated Depot incorporates sustainability. Green roofs span 47,000 square meters. They help lower indoor temperatures. They are expected to remove about 84 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Vented façade panels maximize airflow. This reduces the need for air conditioning.
The East Coast Integrated Depot is more than just a depot. It is a symbol of Singapore’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability. It paves the way for future integrated infrastructure projects.
