The Earl Warren Building a majestic structure stands before you. Its granite and terra-cotta facade whispers tales of California’s legal history.

This is the Earl Warren Building home to the Supreme Court of California. Completed in 1922 it’s named for Earl Warren the 30th governor of California and 14th Chief Justice of the United States. The court first held oral arguments here in 1923. The building is part of the Ronald M George State Office Complex.

Imagine the hushed reverence within its walls. The Supreme Court courtroom is a sight to behold. Oak paneling a coffered ceiling and a towering 30-foot skylight create an atmosphere of gravity and importance. A California landscape mural above the judges’ bench adds a touch of local artistry. The building’s Beaux-Arts style reflects the grandeur of the era in which it was built.

The Earl Warren Building wasn’t immune to the trials of time. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused significant damage. The court vacated the building for extensive renovations. They finally returned in 1999. The restoration was a major undertaking. The building’s seismic systems were completely overhauled. The old and new sections of the building had to be joined with a sophisticated seismic separation joint.

It has witnessed countless landmark decisions and pivotal moments in the state’s judicial history. It stands as a symbol of justice and the pursuit of fairness.
