Beneath the watchful gaze of the Eagle Sculpture, a silent story unfolds. These aren’t just statues. They’re keepers of tales from a time when this very spot pulsed with the energy of young minds. The Eagle Sculpture, two imposing figures of cast iron, stands guard at the entrance of the Asian Civilisations Museum. They have witnessed the transformation of this place from a school to a museum. These majestic birds were originally part of Tao Nan School, which called this building home from 1910 to 1982. Photos from as early as 1932 show the eagles perched here. However, it is believed they were installed even earlier. When Tao Nan School relocated to Marine Parade, the eagles migrated with them. Yet, their connection to this site proved too strong. In 1996, as part of the preservation efforts for the old school building, the eagles returned to their original perch at Armenian Street. Each eagle, weighing approximately 200 kg, is a testament to the school’s history. The Chinese word for eagle, “ying,” also forms part of the word “jing-ying,” meaning “elite.” This suggests the eagles symbolized the potential and bright futures of the students who passed beneath their gaze. In 1996, Taiwanese sculptor Chern Lian Shan meticulously restored these iron guardians. The restoration was a labor of love. It took three months of careful work. The old paint was removed to reveal the metal underneath. Rust was treated, and any gaps were filled. Finally, a fresh coat of black paint brought the eagles back to their former glory. They stand as symbols of excellence, a link to the past, and a testament to the enduring power of history.
