Picture the scene. You stand before Dyssegård a quiet residential area in Gentofte Municipality. It’s not a bustling city center but rather a peaceful haven. Yet this unassuming neighborhood holds a rich history. Dyssegård wasn’t always a collection of charming houses. In the 1800s it was a large farm east of Gentofte Rende a stream now a green corridor.

This farm was part of Gentofte’s lands. A significant brickworks operated nearby. Other farms dotted the landscape. There was Højgård Havsgård Bjergegård and more. These farms existed before the area’s modern development. Imagine the rural atmosphere the sounds of farm life instead of cars.

The early 1900s brought immense change. Copenhagen’s expansion reached Dyssegård. The first building boom happened between 1905 and 1912. Land north and south of the old farm was developed with villas. The southern part followed between 1912 and 1922. The remaining land was developed until 1929. The arrival of the Slangerup railway line in 1906 further accelerated this transformation.

Initially the line only had stops in Emdrup and Vangede. However a halt was added at Dyssegård in 1932. That halt is now Dyssegård Station. Emdrup was later closed as a stop reopening in 1977 as part of the line’s conversion to the S-train network. The area transformed into a primarily residential one filled with houses. Near Vangede Station apartment buildings were constructed.

Dyssegård’s church a striking structure stands where the original farm once was. It’s a testament to the area’s evolution. Constructed between 1957 and 1961 it sits on the highest point of the parish. Interestingly Dyssegård Church is not technically part of Dyssegård’s postcode. It lies within the 2900 Hellerup district. This points to the complex administrative history of the area.

A school too was established in Dyssegård. Dyssegårdsskolen opened in 1932. It initially lacked a planned swimming pool. That space became a temporary church room until the actual church was built. The school remains a vital part of the community. Dyssegård Park and Gentofte Rende provide green spaces. Gentofte Rende’s preservation as a recreational area dates back to Copenhagen’s Green Areas initiative of 1936. The planners foresaw the expansion of the city. They wisely preserved green spaces and connections like Gentofte Rende.

Dyssegård today is a blend of old and new. A place where history and modern life peacefully coexist. A testament to the area’s evolution from a rural farm to a thriving residential neighborhood. So as you walk through Dyssegård remember the farms the brickworks the railway’s arrival and the people who shaped this fascinating area.
