Spring water. Can you imagine that simple necessity giving rise to the world’s oldest amusement park? Welcome to Dyrehavsbakken. It’s often called Bakken. This name helps distinguish it from the royal deer park Dyrehaven. Bakken sits just north of Copenhagen. It has been a source of joy and entertainment for centuries.

The story of Dyrehavsbakken begins in 1583. Kirsten Piil discovered a natural spring. At the time, Copenhagen’s water was not good. People flocked to Piil’s spring believing it had healing powers. The crowds grew especially in springtime. Where crowds gather, commerce follows. Entertainers and hawkers arrived. They sought to amuse and sell. This marked the beginning of Bakken.

For a time, the spring area was off-limits. It was part of the royal hunting grounds. But in 1756, King Frederick V opened the area to the public again. Dyrehavsbakken began to flourish. Entertainers returned. Its reputation spread throughout Europe. Pjerrot is Bakken’s clown. He is still a fixture today. Steamships in 1820 and railroads in 1864 made Bakken easier to reach.

As Bakken became more popular, conditions worsened. In 1885, business owners formed the Dyrehavsbakken Tent Owners’ Association. They improved garbage collection and restroom facilities. They also enhanced the water supply and brought electricity to the park. The association still exists.

Today, Dyrehavsbakken offers a blend of nostalgia and modern thrills. There are 33 rides. One of the most famous is Rutschebanen. It is a wooden roller coaster. It opened in 1932. Bakken also features various attractions. There are gaming halls, live music, and diverse restaurants.

Bakken welcomes millions of visitors each year. Admission to the park is free. You only pay for the individual attractions you choose. Dyrehavsbakken is more than just an amusement park. It is a living piece of Danish history. It is a place where memories are made. It is a testament to the enduring power of simple pleasures.
