A journey funded by the Millennium Commission. A journey that began on land once occupied by a gas works and a brewery. Scottish and Newcastle donated the land. They left in the mid-1990s. Dynamic Earth opened its doors in 1999. Queen Elizabeth II herself officially opened Dynamic Earth.
Dynamic Earth is more than just a science centre. It’s Scotland’s largest interactive visitor attraction. It’s nestled beside the Scottish Parliament building and the Salisbury Crags. Inside Dynamic Earth you’ll find amazing things. You’ll experience an iceberg. You’ll feel the earth shake during a simulated earthquake. You can even travel through the Earth’s history in the Deep Time Machine. It uses multimedia and 4D technology.
Dynamic Earth’s design is incredible. Michael Hopkins and Partners designed it. The architects incorporated the original wall from the old Abbey Brewery. The design cleverly combines nature and artifice. It has a fabric roof a large enclosed entrance area and an outdoor amphitheatre.
The goal of Dynamic Earth? To be the most fun place to learn about the planet. To explore how it formed how it evolves. To consider mankind’s future and the impact of natural and man-made hazards. They’ve certainly achieved that goal. Millions of visitors have explored Dynamic Earth. Over 200000 visited in 2006. Many were school groups. To further boost revenue they offer corporate hospitality and host events. Even weddings.
Dynamic Earth received awards too. A 2001 RIBA Regional Award and a 2000 Civic Trust Award. It’s a 5-star visitor attraction. It even houses a digital 360 degree Planetarium.
