Imagine containers stacked high against the sky. This is the DUSS Umschlagbahnhof in Karlsruhe. It is more than just a place to move cargo. It’s a crucial point in the flow of goods.
The DUSS Umschlagbahnhof lies south of Stuttgarter Straße. It sits between the rail line from Karlsruhe’s main station to Durlach station. It is also near the shunting yard. This puts it in the Südstadt district.
This current facility with its two container cranes began operations in early 1999. It replaced an older, smaller transfer station. That older station had only one crane. It was located east of the Wolfartsweierer Bridge. This puts it in the Oststadt district.
Originally planners intended trains to enter and exit from both directions. However, only direct access to and from Mannheim is possible now. The route was rebuilt specifically for this. A modern signal box was installed. All other destinations such as Stuttgart or Basel require shunting in the freight yard.
The DUSS Umschlagbahnhof is operated by Deutsche Umschlaggesellschaft Schiene – Straße mbH. Its address is Wolfartsweierer Straße 38, 76137 Karlsruhe. You can reach them by phone at 07 21 9 38 51 10.
