“Peace if possible but justice at any rate” This motto greets you at DuSable High School. This isn’t just a school. It’s a Chicago landmark a testament to resilience and the spirit of a community.

DuSable High School opened in 1935. It was built to serve Chicago’s burgeoning African-American population. The school was named after Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable Chicago’s first non-native settler. This choice was significant. It acknowledged the growing influence of the Black community. It also served as a powerful symbol.

DuSable’s early years were marked by extraordinary growth. Enrollment soared past 4000. The school even held two graduation ceremonies each year. Its music program under Captain Walter Dyett became legendary. It launched the careers of many famous jazz musicians. Names like Nat King Cole and Dinah Washington are among its alumni. DuSable’s legacy extends beyond music. It produced leaders in various fields. Mayor Harold Washington and publisher John H Johnson are just two examples.

The school faced challenges as well. Overcrowding was an issue. Gang violence also plagued DuSable for decades. Tragically several students lost their lives to violence within the school’s walls. In the late 1990s the demolition of the Robert Taylor Homes nearby led to declining enrollment.

DuSable adapted. In 2005 it transformed into three smaller schools. The Bronzeville Scholastic Institute and Daniel Hale Williams Preparatory School of Medicine joined the DuSable Leadership Academy. These schools shared the DuSable name and athletic programs. This innovative approach aimed to improve academic performance. The DuSable Leadership Academy unfortunately closed in 2016.

Despite its struggles DuSable High School persevered. Its remarkable history and impact on Chicago are undeniable. It stands as a symbol of hope perseverance and the enduring power of education. The building itself is a Chicago Landmark. It reflects the city’s PWA Moderne architectural style. This impressive structure continues to inspire future generations. DuSable’s story is one of triumph. It is also one of resilience. It is ultimately a story of the vibrant Black community of Bronzeville.
