Amidst the bustling cityscape of Seattle, a hidden gem awaits discovery: Dunn Gardens. This isn’t just any garden. It’s a living testament to a family’s legacy, a century-old masterpiece designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers firm in 1915. Arthur and Jeannette Dunn, founders of the successful Ainsworth & Dunn salmon canning business, envisioned a summer retreat unlike any other. They chose ten acres in the Broadview neighborhood, specifically because they wanted to keep a cow, disallowed in the Highlands. The Olmsted Brothers, known for their naturalistic design philosophy, embraced the existing landscape. They highlighted the views, incorporated Arthur’s beloved deciduous trees, and created a haven of tranquility. Dunn Gardens became more than just a summer escape. It was a place for gatherings and parties. It reflected the family’s passion for gardening, with Arthur, a patron of the Seattle Garden Club, hosting club functions there. His son, Edward, a Northwest native plant expert, left his own mark. He created a woodland garden in 1947, showcasing his hybridized rhododendrons and cherished trillium and erythronium. Dunn Gardens has thrived through generations. Edward ensured its future with an endowment fund, leading to the establishment of the E.B. Dunn Historic Trust in 1993. Two years prior, Dunn Gardens had earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places, opening its gates to the public for tours and educational programs. While the gardens have evolved over time, the Olmsted design remains. Curving driveways and pathways lead visitors through a series of garden “rooms,” offering both a sense of grandeur and intimacy. The magnificent trees, from Sugar Maples to Hawthorns, stand as silent witnesses to the passing seasons.
