Step into the fascinating world of Dunia Serangga. This isn’t just any insect museum. It’s a journey through Indonesia’s incredible biodiversity. President Soeharto himself inaugurated Dunia Serangga in 1993. It stands as a testament to Indonesia’s rich insect life. The museum’s unique design shaped like a giant grasshopper immediately captures your attention. Inside you’ll discover a captivating collection of insects. There are over 600 species on display. Kupu-kupu or butterflies comprise around 250 species. An impressive 200 species of kumbang or beetles are showcased. The remaining 150 species represent a wide array of other insects.

Imagine walking through exhibits detailing the intricate relationships within the arthropod family. Learn how these creatures evolved from ancient marine Protoarthropods. See preserved specimens of the Bactora celebiana. Its antennae are twice the length of its body. Marvel at the striking Samber Ilen beetles with their beautiful green and black backs. Did you know that the Javanese variety is larger than its cousins from Seram Bacan and Buru?

Explore displays featuring the guitar beetle. This 10cm long insect hunts small insects worms and tree fungi. It’s nocturnal preferring the darkness of tree trunks. Then there are the grasshoppers. You’ll see the Valanga nigricornis a grasshopper capable of long-distance travel. It can become a serious pest when its population explodes. Next to it you will find the remarkable stick insect and the leaf insect. Their camouflage is stunning.

But the insect collection is just the beginning. The outdoor butterfly garden is a sight to behold. A variety of plants are specifically chosen to attract butterflies. The plants serve as food for caterpillars before their metamorphosis. They also provide nectar for the adult butterflies. The delicate scales of butterflies are almost like dust clinging to your fingers if you touch them. Each butterfly species shows different scale patterns between males and females. The museum also highlights the unique butterfly populations found on Buru Bacan Seram and Ori islands. Learn how butterflies begin life as eggs laid on leaves. These eggs hatch in three to five days becoming larvae. After reaching their maximum size the larvae stop feeding attaching themselves to branches or leaves. The transformation into a fully formed butterfly takes seven to twenty days depending on the species.

Dunia Serangga is more than just a museum. It’s a living testament to the wonders of Indonesia’s insect world. It’s a place of learning discovery and appreciation for the small creatures that play such a big role in our ecosystem. So take your time explore every corner. Let Dunia Serangga enchant you.
