Was this town named after someone named Duncan? Here at the Duncanville Plaque, the answer reveals itself. This plaque, standing as a testament to Duncanville’s past, takes us back to its humble beginnings. Duncanville wasn’t always a bustling suburb of Dallas. It all started in 1845 with a man named Crawford Trees. He purchased a large swathe of land south of Camp Dallas, laying the groundwork for what would become Duncanville. The town’s namesake, however, wasn’t Trees, but a railroad line foreman named Duncan. When the Chicago, Texas and Mexican Central Railway came through in 1880, they christened the area “Duncan Switch”. It was a fitting tribute to their hardworking foreman. A few years later, in 1882, the town’s first postmaster, Charles P. Nance, officially changed the name to Duncanville. And so, a town found its identity, forever linked to the legacy of the railroad and the man named Duncan.
