Gazing upon Duncan Street Baptist Church, one might sense echoes of sermons past and hymns sung with fervor. Duncan Street Baptist Church stands as a testament to a vibrant and enduring faith community in Edinburgh. Its story begins not here, but across town in Leith, with James A. Haldane. In 1808, Haldane, pastor of the Tabernacle in Leith, embraced believer’s baptism, leading his congregation down a new path. This Baptist congregation thrived under Haldane until his death in 1851. A period of decline followed. Years later, under Rev. William Tulloch, they faced a dilemma. Their Tabernacle was too large, dilapidated, and ill-suited to their needs. Meanwhile, the United Presbyterian Church of Newington had outgrown their own chapel on Duncan Street. Built in 1841, this chapel, with its 700-person capacity, became available. In 1864, the Tabernacle Trustees purchased the Duncan Street building, establishing Duncan Street Baptist Church. A fascinating piece of history involves the renowned C.H. Spurgeon. Invited by Rev. Tulloch, Spurgeon preached two services at the Music Hall on George Street. The offerings from these services helped cover the £1300 purchase price of the Duncan Street chapel. The back halls of the church, previously a school, weren’t fully acquired until 1894, for an additional £400. Duncan Street Baptist Church has witnessed numerous changes over the decades. The side balconies were removed, reducing seating to 300. Modern heating and lighting systems were installed. And today, the church continues to adapt, considering further renovations to ensure its relevance in the 21st century. Duncan Street Baptist Church has continuously served as a beacon of faith since its establishment, echoing the spirit of Haldane and the legacy of those who have worshipped within its walls.
