What secrets do the weathered stones of Dunave hold? Nestled in the captivating Konavle region of Croatia, Dunave is a village whispering tales of a rich and layered past. Don’t let its tranquil present fool you. Dunave has witnessed the ebb and flow of civilizations, leaving behind echoes of their presence. High above the village, perched atop a rocky crag, stands the Sokol Fort, a silent sentinel guarding Dunave’s secrets. This fortress, first mentioned in records long before the rise of the Dubrovnik Republic, harks back to prehistoric times when it served as a refuge, a hillfort protecting the fledgling community below. As centuries marched on, the fort evolved, adapting to the changing tides of time. During the Late Antiquity, it stood as a stalwart defender of the Konavle region against encroaching threats. By the 15th century, the powerful Dubrovnik Republic recognized its strategic importance, incorporating it into their formidable defenses. For over two centuries, Sokol Fort stood guard, a symbol of the Republic’s might. However, even the mightiest fortresses are not immune to the whims of nature. In 1667, a devastating earthquake, known as the “Big Cherry,” shook the region, leaving its mark on Sokol Fort. The once-imposing structure fell into disrepair, its stones bearing silent witness to the passage of time. Yet, from the ashes of destruction, a new chapter began. The Society of Friends of Dubrovnik Antiquity recognized the historical significance of Sokol Fort and embarked on a mission to restore it to its former glory. Their dedication bore fruit in 2013 when the fort was reopened to the public, offering a glimpse into its captivating past. As you stand here, imagine the clash of swords, the echo of footsteps from centuries past, and the stories that these ancient stones could tell. Dunave, with its resilient spirit and captivating history, invites you to explore its hidden corners and uncover the secrets woven into its very fabric.
