In the gentle embrace of the Danube River lies Dunakeszi. This vibrant town, just north of Budapest, whispers tales of a rich past. Dunakeszi is a gateway to the Danube Bend. It stands as a testament to centuries of human endeavor.

Dunakeszi’s story begins in the Middle Ages. The name first appears in a 1255 charter. King Béla IV granted the land to Seywerdus, son of the ispán of Fejér county. Dunakeszi grew slowly, shaped by agriculture and river trade. Its location made it a strategic point. The Romans recognized this, building a fortified harbor here in the 4th century AD. The remains of this fort can still be seen today near the Dunakeszi ferry pier.

The 18th century brought a golden age for Dunakeszi. Count Antal Grassalkovich, a prominent figure, acquired the town. Under his patronage, Dunakeszi flourished. He commissioned the construction of St. Michael’s Church, a beautiful Baroque structure that still graces the town. This church became a symbol of Dunakeszi’s prosperity and faith.

Dunakeszi continued to evolve. The arrival of the railway in the 19th century connected it to Budapest and the wider world. This brought new opportunities and challenges. Dunakeszi became known for its tomato and grape production. The fertile land and sunny climate proved ideal for these crops. Alag, now a district of Dunakeszi, gained fame for its horse racing. The Hungarian Equestrian Association established a training center and racecourse here. This attracted horse enthusiasts and prominent figures from across Europe.

The 20th century brought both hardship and progress. Two world wars left their mark on Dunakeszi. But the town persevered, rebuilding and adapting. The Máv Main Workshop opened in 1926. This spurred industrial growth and led to the development of a new part of town. Dunakeszi even played a role in a significant national event. The workshop crafted the “Golden Train” to transport the Holy Right hand of St. Stephen during the 900th anniversary of his death.

Today, Dunakeszi is a thriving town. It blends its historical heritage with modern amenities. The Danube River still plays a vital role in the town’s life. It provides a scenic backdrop and offers recreational opportunities. Dunakeszi is a town that remembers its past while embracing the future. Its story continues to be written, shaped by the people who call it home.
