From the rhythmic whirring of unseen machinery, a nickname was born. This is Dugattyús-ház, the “Piston House”. Its unique cylindrical elevators, encased in glass and gliding smoothly up and down, inspired the moniker. Dugattyús-ház stands proudly on the corner of Margit körút and Rómer Flóris utca. Built in 1937, Dugattyús-ház showcases the Bauhaus style, a true gem of the neighborhood. Originally commissioned by the Weiss Manfréd Factories Pension Fund, Dugattyús-ház was designed by the architects Ferenc Domány and Béla Hofstätter. It represents one of the most remarkable buildings of its era. Today, this architectural masterpiece enjoys protected status, a testament to its enduring significance. The ground floor of Dugattyús-ház once housed the offices and showroom of the Budapest Electrical Works. Imagine the bustling activity within these walls. Now, imagine the possibilities for this expansive 600 square meter space. The two wings of Dugattyús-ház address a unique challenge. The terrain rises significantly between Margit körút and Mecset utca. The architects cleverly navigated this elevation change with a split-level design. This allows for entrances on both streets and a seamless transition between the two wings. The cylindrical elevators offer separate access to the apartments in each wing. Picture stepping into one of these glass capsules, ascending to your floor with a panoramic view of the unique architecture. The main staircase offers another unique perspective. Each landing provides access to three apartments. As you ascend or descend, imagine the lives lived within these walls, each with their own story to tell. Dugattyús-ház is more than just a building. It is a symbol of innovation, a testament to the forward-thinking architects of the Bauhaus era. It is a piece of Budapest’s rich history.
