In 1415, the Druselturm was completed. It stood as a silent guardian, watching over Kassel’s Freiheit district. The Druselturm was more than just a tower. It was a vital part of Kassel’s defenses. It reinforced a weak point in the city wall where the Drusel stream flowed into the city. The Drusel stream played a crucial role in the city’s sanitation. It filled the Druselteich, a pond before the tower, then flowed through the city’s streets. The water cleansed the city, carrying away waste. This innovative system kept Kassel clean in a time when sanitation was a major challenge. The Druselturm was also a prison. Imagine being lowered through a hole in the tower floor. You descend into the dark, chilling depths of the tower’s dungeon. Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous later added heating to these cells. His own experience as a prisoner had taught him the misery of a cold cell. The Druselturm’s history is one of change. Originally built with six turret-like structures on its roof, these were removed in 1686. The tower burned completely in 1905. Then was rebuilt in 1906 with four smaller turrets. These turrets graced Kassel’s skyline until World War II. The Druselturm survived the 1943 air raid, though its roof was damaged. Today, the Druselturm stands 44 meters tall. Its circular base measures 9.20 meters in diameter. The tower leans slightly, a testament to its age and history. Only the top floor and the current smooth conical roof stand perfectly straight. While not regularly open to the public, the Druselturm can be visited on special occasions. It offers a glimpse into Kassel’s past. It tells a story of defense, imprisonment, and the city’s innovative approach to sanitation.
