Long ago Drury Creek was more than just a waterway. It was a lifeline. It connected the people of Ngāti Tamaoho to the wider world. This creek and its surrounding area. Opāheke was a vital place. It was at the meeting point of Otuwairoa and Drury Creek. Ngāti Tamaoho controlled the movement of people goods and food. The Manukau Harbour was a significant taonga a treasure. The awa the waterways provided access between Tāmaki Makaurau and Waikato.

The history of Drury Creek is rich and complex. It stretches back to the arrival of the Tainui waka from Hawaiki. Crew from the Tainui and other ancestors of Ngāti Tamaoho settled here. Over time other tribes like Te Akitai Ngāi Tai and Ngāti Pou formed strong ties to the land. They used the creek and the harbour as a vital food source. The harbour was seen as a pātaka kai a food bowl.

In 1836 Waikato and Hauraki chiefs transferred land to the Church Missionary Society. This was the Fairburn purchase. A third was meant for the tribes but this was never fully realised. Large areas of Ngāti Tamaoho’s ancestral lands were lost. By 1845 most remaining land was sold to settlers. The land around Drury Creek was changing.

1855 brought a military camp Commander Byron Drury established a redoubt and commissariat. A port Runciman’s Wharf was built. This reflects the growing importance of Drury Creek. The discovery of coal by Henry Chamberlain brought further changes. The Waihoihoi Coal Company was formed. In 1861 the first railway in the North Island was built. It connected Drury to Auckland transporting coal.

The Waikato land wars began in 1863. The conflict deeply affected Drury Creek and its people. Many lives were lost. Members of Ngāti Tamaoho were captured and held prisoner. This remains a place of solemn remembrance. The wars ended in 1864. Activity shifted to Papakura. The coal mine closed in 1866 but the impact of these events shaped the area forever.

Through the years Drury Creek witnessed further changes. A football club was formed in 1905. A new railway station opened in 1918 replacing older ones. A cheese factory operated from 1939 to 1979. State Highway One was extended. Drury Creek continues to flow a witness to centuries of history. It reflects the enduring spirit of the land and its people.
