On a chilly December evening in 1886, a hush fell over the crowd gathered on the corner of 6th and Brazos Streets. All eyes were on the majestic Driskill Hotel, its limestone accents gleaming under the gaslights. The Driskill Hotel Plaque stands as a testament to this grand opening, a night that marked the culmination of cattle baron Jesse Driskill’s dream to build “the finest hotel south of St. Louis.” The plaque tells the story of Driskill, a man who arrived in Texas with nothing but ambition and amassed a fortune during the Civil War supplying beef to the Confederate Army. Flush with cash, he purchased this land for $7,500 and poured his heart and soul into constructing this opulent palace. The Driskill Hotel, with its Romanesque architecture and luxurious amenities like corner rooms with attached baths, was unlike anything Austin had ever seen. The grand opening was the talk of the town, covered in a special edition of the Austin Daily Statesman. Governor Sul Ross himself chose the Driskill Hotel’s ballroom for his inaugural ball, kicking off a tradition that continues to this day with every Texas governor since. The plaque doesn’t reveal everything though. It whispers of the hotel’s resilience, surviving near-demolition in 1969 thanks to a community that understood the Driskill’s place in their city’s heart. It stands as a reminder that some dreams, like the Driskill Hotel itself, are simply too grand to fade away.
