Hidden within the bustling city of Chicago lies a tranquil oasis known as Drexel Park. This small but mighty park, spanning just over 0.31 acres, holds more than meets the eye. It’s a place where children’s laughter fills the air and families gather for picnics under the shade of trees. Drexel Park wasn’t always a park. The land was acquired in 1972 by the Chicago Park District, with the help of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. But its story goes back even further. The park is named after nearby Drexel Boulevard, a street named in honor of the influential Drexel family from Philadelphia. Francis M. Drexel, the family patriarch, was a prominent banker and real estate investor who owned a significant amount of land in the area. He played a key role in the development of what is now West Englewood. His sons, Francis A. and Anthony J. Drexel, continued their father’s legacy. They donated another piece of land, further east, to the South Park Commission. This land became the site of a beautiful fountain, erected in 1882 to commemorate their father. The fountain, known as the Drexel Fountain, still stands today in Drexel Square. Next time you find yourself in Drexel Park, take a moment to appreciate its history. It’s a testament to the Drexel family’s contributions to Chicago. And it’s a reminder that even in the heart of a bustling city, pockets of peace and tranquility can be found.
