Ever wonder how royalty and football mix? Right here at Dresden Monarchs e.V., they blend seamlessly. The Dresden Monarchs, founded in 1992, aren’t just a team; they’re a dynasty. Their name, inspired by Saxon royalty, especially Augustus the Strong, reflects their ambition on the field. The team’s logo even incorporates Augustus’s insignia. The Dresden Monarchs started their journey in Radeberg as the Saxonia Monarchs. They quickly moved to Dresden, donned their first uniforms in 1993, and began their ascent. They climbed through the leagues, reaching the 2nd Bundesliga in 1999 as the first East German team to do so. In 2002, they conquered the German Football League (GFL). The pinnacle of their reign arrived in October 2021. They seized the German Bowl XLII title, becoming German champions for the first time. The Monarchs initially trained themselves at TSV Dresden-Bühlau’s Waldsportplatz. They later recruited German and American coaches. From March 1994, they called the former velodrome at Bärnsdorfer Straße their training ground and home stadium. In 1998, Larry Long became the first American player to join the team. Between 2001 and 2002, the Bärnsdorfer Straße stadium transformed into a modern American football training center. It boasts an artificial turf field, a rarity in Germany. Due to increasing fan numbers, the Monarchs eventually moved their home games to Heinz-Steyer-Stadion, sometimes called “Heinz Field” by fans. They occasionally play at Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion as well. With the renovation of Heinz-Steyer-Stadion, the Monarchs returned to Bärnsdorfer Straße in 2022. The team’s journey embodies the spirit of Augustus the Strong.
