Five hundred halls and rooms once filled Dresden Castle. A testament to Saxon power it stood for centuries. The castle’s story begins long ago. A Romanesque keep around 1200 formed its core. It grew over the centuries. Expansions and renovations shaped its form. Augustus the Strong Elector of Saxony and King of Poland oversaw a Baroque makeover. He rebuilt much of the castle after a devastating fire in 1701. The western wing housed opulent collection rooms. The Silver Room the Heraldic Room and the Pretiosensaal were built between 1723 and 1726. The Kaminzimmer Jewel Room Ivory Room and Bronze Room followed between 1727 and 1729.

The castle’s grandeur however was not without interruption. World War II brought destruction. Bombing raids on February 13 1945 reduced most of it to a shell. Three rooms of the Green Vault were destroyed. But the collections survived. They had been moved to the safety of Königstein Fortress before the war.

For fifteen years after the war the castle stood ruined. A temporary roof was installed in 1946. Restoration started slowly in the 1960s with new windows. The pace picked up. Today Dresden Castle stands as a symbol of resilience. A magnificent Baroque palace complex once again graces Dresden. It houses museums and galleries. The Historic Green Vault showcases a wealth of treasures. The New Green Vault displays European art.

The Royal Palace the central building houses these and more. Intricate stucco work ornate frescoes and beautiful tapestries adorn its opulent interior. The Procession of Princes a 102-meter-long mural originally painted on the Stallhof is now preserved on Meissen porcelain tiles. It depicts the history of the Wettin family Saxony’s ruling dynasty. The castle’s ongoing restoration shows the city’s determination. It is a beautiful testament to Dresden’s enduring spirit. Its restoration is a beacon of hope reminding us of the city’s unwavering spirit.
