The triangular silhouette cuts sharply against the sky. This is the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in Lübeck-Kücknitz. Its story begins not with ancient stones but with post-war dreams.

In 1951 a new settlement blossomed in Kücknitz called Roter Hahn. Thousands of refugees from the lost eastern territories arrived. They found temporary homes in camps like Pöppendorf and the Flender-Lager. Their numbers swelled creating a longing for community. A need for a church.

On February 3 1964 the Dreifaltigkeitskirchengemeinde was founded. The cornerstone for their new church was laid in 1963. Architect Otto Andersen designed the building. Werner Groß oversaw its construction. The building was completed in 1965.

The church’s name Dreifaltigkeitskirche meaning Trinity Church inspired its design. The triangle symbolizes the Holy Trinity. The 45-meter-tall bell tower is a prominent landmark.

The building itself is remarkable. It’s shaped like a tent. The altar faces northeast. Triangular steel girders form the structure. Inside they are covered with wood paneling outside with copper sheeting. The pews point directly at the altar interrupted by walkways.

The baptismal font stands midway between the front pews and altar. It features reliefs depicting Noah’s story. The font along with the Easter candle and altar crucifix were crafted by Hamburg sculptor Fritz Fleer. A covered passage connects the church to a simple community center.

The entire complex on Schlesienring is a protected monument. This includes the church its original furnishings the bell tower and the exterior of the community center. Even the connecting walkway and surrounding open space are protected.

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche’s first organ had a humble past. It came from Flender-Lager II. A larger organ from Emanuel Kemper & Sohn was installed in 1967. This one boasts 19 registers two manuals and a pedal.

The bell tower houses four bells. Two of these bells have a history preceding the church itself. They came from the old Flender-Lager.

Since 1998 the Dreifaltigkeitskirche belongs to the larger Kücknitz parish. This parish was formed from a merger of three independent congregations in the district.

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche stands not only as a place of worship but also as a testament to resilience. It’s a monument to hope and community born from the ashes of war. This structure shows how faith helped people rebuild their lives. Look closely at the simple yet striking lines of the building. The Dreifaltigkeitskirche is a hidden jewel a symbol of faith’s enduring power.
