Echoes of history whisper from these grounds. Dreghorn Barracks stand before you a testament to time’s passage. This isn’t just a military base. It’s a place layered with stories stretching centuries. Dreghorn Barracks were built between 1937 and 1939. Architect William Alexander Ross designed this impressive complex. The barracks were upgraded later in 1989-1992. Several new buildings were added then. Four original buildings remain. They are protected as Category C(s) listed buildings.
But Dreghorn’s history runs far deeper. Long before the soldiers marched onto this land stood Dreghorn Castle. This 17th-century mansion was home to Sir William Murray. He was the Master of Work to the Crown of Scotland. The castle was extended around 1805 by Archibald and James Elliot. The War Office acquired it in 1893. The castle was eventually demolished in 1955.
A monument stands outside the barracks. It’s on Redford Road. This monument commemorates the Covenanters. They were defeated at the Battle of Rullion Green in 1666. R A Macfie of Dreghorn House erected it in 1884. The monument includes columns from the 18th-century Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Architect William Adam designed the infirmary. It was demolished the previous year.
Dreghorn Barracks weren’t always destined to remain. As part of the Future Force 2020 announcement plans changed. RAF Kirknewton was initially considered. It was to become a major Army base. Dreghorn Barracks were slated for disposal. However plans changed. In March 2013 Dreghorn Barracks were retained.
Today Dreghorn Barracks are part of the City of Edinburgh Garrison. As of January 1 2024 670 UK Armed Forces personnel were based here. Units stationed at the barracks include the 3rd Battalion The Rifles. The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland is also here. The Edinburgh Troop 521 EOD Squadron and 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Search Regiment Royal Logistic Corps are based here too. Dreghorn Barracks a site of military strength and echoes of a grand past. Its past lives on in the stones. Its future remains strong.
