Overlooking Luebeck’s charming skyline Drägerpark beckons. This isn’t just any park. It’s a green jewel nestled in the St Gertrud district. Specifically in Marli a historical area with roots tracing back to Count Egmont von Chasot. He established a small estate near the Wakenitz River. He named it Marly after a French royal palace. Marly became a hub of Luebeck’s high society.

The Drägerpark’s history is woven into this rich tapestry. In the late 19th century Ferdinand Wallbrecht a Hanoverian builder acquired the Marly estate. Years later in 1909 Stadtgärtner Erwin Barth designed “Platz auf Marly”. He used the existing topography. He created six distinct areas. He cleverly framed views of Luebeck’s western skyline. He incorporated architectural and garden elements. Native trees and undergrowth created inviting spaces. Barth prioritized wildflowers and herbs over traditional lawns.

The architectural style blends elements of Rococo and the English landscape garden. This elegant style is palpable in the Drägerpark today. The Drägerpark itself is four hectares. It encompasses the 1.3 hectare Platz auf Marly. Barth’s original structure remains partially visible. The terraced area along Marlistrasse is a testament to this. Ornamental trees and undergrowth complement the existing trees. Daffodils add a splash of vibrant yellow to the slopes.

The Drägerpark offers more than just aesthetics. Walking paths invite leisurely strolls. Large playing fields and playgrounds cater to children. In winter the park transforms into a popular sledding hill. This four-hectare haven was donated to the city in 1977. It was a gift from the Dräger Foundation. A commemorative stone marks the occasion. It displays the year the park was given to the city and its name.

Drägerpark isn’t simply a park. It’s a living history lesson. It’s a blend of elegant design. It’s a peaceful retreat. It’s a vibrant community space. As you stand here feel the layers of history beneath your feet. See the beautiful views before you. Remember Drägerpark’s transformation. It’s a story of vision. It’s a story of generosity.
