Could a life forged in adversity blossom into a legacy of green? Here at the Dr. Radó Dezső Plaque, we uncover the story of a man who rose from challenging beginnings to become a champion of Budapest’s green spaces. Dr. Radó Dezső, born in 1922, spent his childhood in orphanages, working as a farmhand. His thirst for knowledge led him to devour the entire collection of the Szombathely library. He became involved in the labor movement before arriving in Budapest after liberation. Here, he served as a party organizer and political school lecturer. Dr. Radó Dezső pursued his education, earning degrees in economics and horticulture, even achieving a doctorate in 1970. His dissertation explored the interplay of garden design, construction, and usage. His career took a significant turn in 1958 when he became chief accountant of the Capital City Construction and Public Works Company. From 1962 to 1984, Dr. Radó Dezső directed the Capital City Horticultural Company, shaping Budapest’s green landscape. Simultaneously, he served on the district party committee and lectured on management theory and urban economics. A lifelong environmentalist, he passionately advocated for urban trees and green spaces. This advocacy extended to his publications and frequent radio and television appearances. Even after retiring in 1984, Dr. Radó Dezső continued his environmental work. He contributed his expertise to the Budapest City Protection Association. He also joined the Clean Air Action Group upon its formation in 1988, eventually becoming chairman of its Expert Board. For three decades, his research focused on the environmental and economic value of green spaces. He even identified the cause of the horse chestnut tree blight. The methods he developed with his colleagues are still used nationwide. Dr. Radó Dezső’s legacy continues to inspire us to value and protect our urban green spaces. This plaque stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication and the profound impact he had on Budapest. His life proves that even from the humblest beginnings, one can cultivate a flourishing legacy.
